What volunteers do

  • Horse leader: leads the horse and keeps it calm and steady.
  • Side-walker: walks beside the rider, offering support and encouragement.
  • Yard helper: grooms, tacks up and cares for the horses.

Getting started

  1. Send us the form

Tell us a bit about you and when you're free.

  2. Come to a workshop

Three hours, free, with morning tea. Covers safety, leading and side-walking.

  3. Shadow a session

Work alongside an experienced volunteer until you feel ready.

  4. Join the roster

Most volunteers come once a week for a morning or afternoon.

Training

Every new volunteer does our introductory workshop. After that, we run refresher sessions each term and extra training for people who want to become horse leaders.

See the events page for workshop dates.
